Murchison Falls

Murchison Falls National Park derives its name from the Murchison falls where the mighty River Nile explodes through a narrow gorge. The river then flows down to become a placid river whose banks are thronged with hippos, crocodiles, waterbucks and buffaloes. Murchison Falls Protected Area (MFNP) is made up of Bugungu and Karuma Wildlife Reserves. The park has a variety of Wild life including lions, chimpanzees Uganda kobs and many bird species including the rare shoebill. Vegetation is characterized by Savannah, revering forest and woodland.

Activities include:

· Game Drives: There is plenty of Game on the Buligi, Albert and Queen’s tracks north of the River Nile. Wildlife includes Giraffes, elephants and other game on the grassy hillsides.

· Nature Walks: The Park offers an opportunity to explore the wild on foot to closely observe a variety of birds, Animals and plants.

· Top of the Falls: The trail goes to the top of the falls to the water's edge. You can hike to the top of the falls from the boat landing and to get close to narrow gorge through which the river explodes into the falls.

· Forest walk: This is done beneath mature mahogany and iron wood trees at kaniyo pabidi. The walk takes you to Chimpanzee tracking, which is the most famous activity in the park. You will have a chance to view forest birds, like the white-thigh hornbill, chocolate-backed kingfisher, and puvel's illadopsis found nowhere else in East Africa.

· Rabongo forest: Rabongo Forest Ecotourism centre is surrounded by Savannah grassland and is 11/2hour drive from Paraa. You will explore the forest on foot, spotting primates like black and white colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, baboons and occasionally chimpanzees, identifying animals, birds, medicinal plants and trees. You can picnic and camp by the Wairingo River.

· Sport Fishing: This is done in rivers above and below the falls. Nile Perch and tiger-fish provide an exciting challenge to anglers.

· Launch Trips: The launch trip takes you from Paraa to the foot of Murchison Falls on a 17 km trip which takes about 3 hours, and a boat trip from paraa to the delta (28km) and back takes about 4 hrs. Here you will see waterbucks, elephants, buffaloes, and a variety of birds like bee-eaters, herons, cormorants, ducks, fish eagles kingfishers and sometimes the rare shoebill.
